I sort of thought we don't really get to appreciate our youth until it's over--that's just the sad nature of things. Perhaps something to do with wisdom, reflection, and all those other good things that come with maturity.
Just my speculation anyway...I posted this quote mainly because I haven't found an interpretation that I am satisfied with yet...
Give "the gods" some reason to hate you and they'll punish you by keeping you immature and dumb.
